The Essence project revolutionises atrial fibrillation treatment

The research, led by María S. Guillem, concludes successfully after three years of work.

The Cardiac Oriented Research (COR) group at the ITACA Institute announces the excellent results obtained in the ESSENCE project, after three years of work to enhance the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF) through the use of artificial intelligence and advanced mathematical models.

ESSENCE aimed to develop and validate an electrostructural assessment tool that significantly improves the efficacy of ablation procedures. By collecting and analyzing detailed cardiac imaging and signal data, researchers created precise maps of the heart, identifying critical areas for ablation.

This innovative approach was designed with a main goal: improving patient outcomes and quality of life.

“The traditional diagnostic methods often lack the detailed insights necessary for personalized treatment plans. With ESSENCE, we can visualize complex arrhythmia patterns more accurately, facilitating precise diagnoses and targeted therapies” says Dr. María S. Guillem, the leading researcher in the project.

Multiple advantages

Indeed, the impact of ESSENCE is multifaceted, extending beyond scientific innovation to deliver significant social and economic benefits. Enhanced ablation procedures could potentially reduce healthcare costs and extend the lives of AF patients by up to eight years.

ESSENCE also emphasizes the importance of researcher training and collaboration. The project provided invaluable opportunities for predoctoral researchers, including a specialized course in Scientific Writing in Teams.

This training is essential for fostering a new generation of scientists capable of working effectively in interdisciplinary and collaborative environments”, highlights María S. Guillem.

ESSENCE represents the mission of the ITACA Institute

Funded by the Spanish State Research Agency, ESSENCE represents the mission of the ITACA institute: to improve society through the application of knowledge derived from cutting-edge research in information and communication technologies (ICT).

Located at the Scientific Park of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), ITACA is dedicated to conducting translational research that addresses societal challenges and promotes scientific advances that can be directly implemented by public and private entities.
