A collaboration among the ITACA-SABIEN group at the Universitat Politècnica de València, the Research Centre for Management and Production Engineering at UPV, the company DEXCOM, and the Andalusian Health Service was honoured at the prestigious Ennova Health Awards 2024, organised by Diario Médico and Correo Farmacéutico.
The project received the award in the «Big Data and Artificial Intelligence» category for its innovative approach to managing diabetes through advanced data analysis and unsupervised machine learning.
An advanced system for personalised diabetes management
“The dashboard enables personalised visualisations and real-time updates, providing key information for self-management and informed healthcare decisions”, explains Antonio Martínez Millana, Deputy Director of ITACA-UPV and a participating researcher in the project.
In addition, the system implements a clustering model that categorises patients into three groups based on their glucose profiles and sensor usage. This facilitates personalised treatment strategies, diabetes education, and guidance in using the sensors. The platform will be validated in the coming months to assess its potential for cost savings and efficiency in resource allocation within real-world settings.
The project addresses the need to optimise the use of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sensors in diabetes care through real-time data analysis. To achieve this, a system has been developed that automates the extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) of glucose sensor data, integrating it into an interactive dashboard with two levels of access: healthcare professionals and patients.
“The system has been developed using anonymised data from 640 patients in the province of Seville, incorporating clinical and demographic information. The visual analytics tool allows for the identification of patterns among patients, improving clinical decision-making and treatment planning,” adds the researcher from the ITACA-SABIEN group.
This recognition at the Ennova Health Awards 2024 reaffirms the positive societal impact of technological innovation developed at ITACA.
