Greenhouse gas emission risk management in forest fires

Combating climate change is one of the core axes of European Union policies, where forest ecosystems play a vital role. The different components of forest systems, in particular the plants of the different vegetation strata and the soil, can fix significant amounts of carbon through different processes. However, after a forest fire, the ecosystem releases the previously fixed carbon into the atmosphere. REMAS provides solutions based on scientific analysis to identify critical areas with a higher risk of emissions, allowing efforts in prevention, management, extinction, and restoration to be focused efficiently.

The project’s goal is to quantify the carbon emission risk contained in forest ecosystems into the atmosphere by forest fires. REMAS aims to propose emissions prevention measures and improve the capacity of ecosystems to store carbon after a fire, while actively including CO₂ emission risk in planning strategies and fire prevention plans at the transnational level. Capitalising its results in medium-to-long-term strategies of the EU and each country of the consortium will improve governance in the planning and management of renewable natural resources.

The scientific models and methodologies developed are designed to transfer knowledge to other competent authorities in risk prevention and management, as well as to forest owners through technical training. This will improve the coordination and effectiveness of instruments for prevention, disaster management, and the rehabilitation of disaster areas within the territory.
