Innovative Eco-Construction System Based on Interlocking Modular Insulation Wood & Cork-Based Panels

The objective of the project is to improve the energy efficiency of public buildings throughout their life cycle by using an innovative, environmentally friendly system based on locally sourced materials, such as cork and Mediterranean pine. These materials will help increase the profitability of local sawmills, improve forest management, and consequently create employment opportunities for rural populations in Spain, Portugal, and southern France.

More specifically, within the framework of the IMIP project, cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels will be designed and manufactured from Mediterranean pine (Aleppo and maritime pine), incorporating an inner layer of expanded cork to enhance their thermal insulation and acoustic performance. The panels will be modular to facilitate assembly, disassembly, and reuse, thereby reducing both the energy costs associated with demolition and the amount of construction waste generated. In addition, they will be tested in the construction and renovation of four actual public buildings, two of which are located in Valencia.

The project will also involve developing a BIM (Building Information Modelling) plug-in that incorporates the life-cycle benefits of the materials used, including factors such as carbon storage.
