February 11th marks the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a day to celebrate the contributions of women in STEM fields and to encourage future generations to break barriers in scientific research.
On this day, we would like to celebrate all the women who, through their dedication and passion, continue to break barriers in science and technology, inspiring future generations to follow in their footsteps.
At COR Group, we take this opportunity to highlight some of the remarkable women who have shaped and continue to drive advancements in cardiology, electrophysiology, and electrocardiographic imaging (ECGI).
Women Who Shaped Cardiac Research
- Dr. Helen Brooke Taussig (1898-1986) – Known as the founder of pediatric cardiology, Taussig developed the Blalock-Taussig shunt, a life-saving procedure for children with congenital heart defects. Her research laid the foundation for modern cardiac electrophysiology.
- Dr. Maude Abbott (1869-1940) – A pioneer in congenital heart disease research, Abbott compiled the first classification system for heart malformations, shaping how we understand cardiac abnormalities today.
- Dr. Sian Harding – A leading contemporary researcher in cardiac electrophysiology, Harding has made groundbreaking contributions to cardiac stem cell therapy and arrhythmia research, influencing how we approach personalized cardiac treatments.
- Dr. Natalia Trayanova – A pioneer in using computational modeling and AI in cardiology, Trayanova has advanced the field of digital twins for cardiac treatment, revolutionizing non-invasive therapy planning for arrhythmias.
Women Leading the Way in ECGI and Cardiac Innovation
Women are at the forefront of cardiac electrophysiology, pioneering advancement in artificial intelligence, ECGI, and computational cardiology to develop non-invasive diagnostic techniques and personalized therapies. Their contributions not only push the boundaries of science, but also inspire young girls to pursue careers in STEM.
At COR Group, we are proud to highlight our Main Researcher, Dr. María Guillem, who plays a crucial role in advancing cardiac research. She has led multiple research projects, contributed to significant advancements in non-invasive cardiac diagnostics, and is an inspiring role model for future generations of women in STEM.
“Today, we want to honor the brilliant minds shaping the future of ECGI and cardiac research, and we encourage the next generation to join this exciting field”, says Dr. Maria Guillem.
Recently, Dr. Guillem was interviewed in the «Ellas Hablan de Ciencia» program at UPV, where she shared insights into her research, the challenges she has faced in her scientific career, and advice for aspiring researchers.
