{"id":16189,"date":"2026-05-18T11:02:20","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T11:02:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/ictvscc\/itaca-upv-researchers-analyse-how-media-coverage-influences-public-perception-of-forest-management\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T11:02:20","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T11:02:20","slug":"itaca-upv-researchers-analyse-how-media-coverage-influences-public-perception-of-forest-management","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/ictvscc\/itaca-upv-researchers-analyse-how-media-coverage-influences-public-perception-of-forest-management\/","title":{"rendered":"ITACA-UPV researchers analyse how media coverage influences public perception of forest management"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Researchers from the ICTs Against Climate Change (ICT VS CC)<\/strong> group at the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/\" id=\"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> ITACA Institute of the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia<\/a>, in collaboration with Guillermo Palau from the INGENIO Institute (CSIC-UPV), <strong>have published a study revealing how public perception and media coverage decisively influence the acceptance of sustainable forest management (SFM) in Mediterranean contexts<\/strong>, especially in regions vulnerable to climate change such as the Valencian Community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The paper, published in the scientific journal <em>Sustainability<\/em>, presents a comprehensive approach that combines analysis of the media ecosystem, narrative mapping, and a survey of more than 1,000 people in the Valencian region t<strong>o understand how social perceptions of forests and their management are shaped.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research highlights a significant gap between high public awareness of climate change and limited understanding of forest management practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe found a paradox: society recognises the importance of forests in addressing climate change, but does not always understand the active role required in their management,\u201d explains Marta Esteve, lead researcher of the study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A pioneering study on public perception and media narratives<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this regard, the research shows that public perception is strongly influenced by the media&#8217;s approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNews coverage mainly <strong>focuses on forest fires and other extreme events, creating a reactive and simplified view of the issue. <\/strong>As a result, forest management becomes associated with crisis situations rather than being seen as a preventive, ongoing, and necessary policy to reduce risks and improve ecosystem resilience\u201d, says Jos\u00e9 Vicente Oliver, co-author of the study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This lack of information also contributes to a <strong>distorted perception of the state of forests, which are often considered to be in decline, despite the fact that in many Mediterranean areas forest cover has actually increased,<\/strong> linked to rural depopulation and natural regeneration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, the <strong>research shows that in digital environments there is \u201cgreater polarisation of discourse and a predominance of emotional content,<\/strong> which makes it more difficult to communicate technical and contextualised information\u201d, according to the ITACA researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Conclusions: communication as the key to forest management<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, the paper concludes that public <strong>acceptance of sustainable forest management depends largely on communication factors<\/strong>,  not only technical considerations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is necessary to develop clearer, more continuous communication strategies tailored to different audiences.
