{"id":16169,"date":"2025-12-04T12:09:24","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T12:09:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/ictvscc\/itaca-researchers-adress-the-challenges-of-the-forestry-sector\/"},"modified":"2025-12-04T12:09:24","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T12:09:24","slug":"itaca-researchers-adress-the-challenges-of-the-forestry-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/ictvscc\/itaca-researchers-adress-the-challenges-of-the-forestry-sector\/","title":{"rendered":"ITACA researchers adress the challenges of the forestry sector"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/\">ITACA research<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">er<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/\">s<\/a> recently participated in a technical roundtable focused on <strong>lessons learned from large forest fires in a context marked by climate change and land abandonment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event, held at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upv.es\/entidades\/etsiamn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ETSEAMN-UPV<\/a> on 20 November to mark <em>Forest Day<\/em>, brought together <strong>forestry engineering students, master\u2019s students in forestry engineering, and doctoral students, who filled the auditorium.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The session, e<\/strong>ntitled \u00ab<em>Lessons Learned from Wildfires<\/em>\u00ab, <strong>was coordinated by Jos\u00e9 Vicente Oliver, ITACA researcher and coordinator of the Horizon Europe <a href=\"https:\/\/informa-forests.eu\/es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">INFORMA project,<\/a> and featured the participation of:<\/strong> <strong>Eduardo Rojas Briales,<\/strong> ITACA researcher and Chief of the Scientific Committee of INFORMA; <strong>Ferr\u00e1n Dalmau Rovira<\/strong>, forestry engineer and director of Medi XXI GSA; and <strong>\u00c1lvaro Escrig del Valle<\/strong>, technical coordinator of the Valencia Provincial Firefighters Consortium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the debate, the experts agreed on the need to preserve the agro-forestry mosaic, emphasising that \u201cevery farmer and livestock breeder who remains in the region is key to curbing large-scale fires\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They also highlighted the <strong>importance of integrating technical fire use into adaptive forest management, especially in landscapes where fuel accumulation increases both fire risk and intensity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15772\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The INFORMA Project and its impact on our ecosystems<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The discussion naturally aligns with the vision of the European INFORMA project, which aims to promote sustainable, adaptive, and climate-smart forest management across Europe and to strengthen<strong> the transfer of scientific knowledge to administrations, companies, and citizens.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oliver stressed that European forestry science \u201chas much to contribute in a climatic scenario that no longer resembles conditions from just two decades ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another major topic of the day was the professional future of forestry engineers. The speakers warned of a growing shortage of technicians in rural and forestry areas, a deficit that may become more acute in the coming years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The forestry sector and climate change<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThere is expected to be no unemployment in the forestry sector,\u201d they noted, encouraging students to prepare for a job market with high demand for specialists in forest management, emergencies, post-fire restoration, and land-use planning.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They also emphasised the importance of soft skills\u2014attitude, commitment, leadership, and communication\u2014and the opportunity to develop their own initiatives related to forestry entrepreneurship and the bioeconomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Climate change is also causing countries that had previously experienced few major fires to face more of them, increasing<strong> demand for professionals trained in Spain.<\/strong> Even so, the message was clear: \u201cBroadening your perspective and vision, training abroad is necessary and very enriching, but not at the cost of brain drain; the country needs this talent to return\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The importance of communication <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The technical panel also addressed an increasingly urgent challenge: communication during forest fires and, more generally, forest-related communication. The experts acknowledged that tactical decisions, such as withdrawing from certain fronts, allowing the fire to advance in strategic areas, or prioritising personnel safety, often generate misunderstanding among society and the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cBehind these decisions lies a profound understanding of fire behaviour, the territory, and risk, but this is not always successfully communicated,\u201d they pointed out.<\/strong> Hence, there is a need to improve forestry pedagogy and to train journalists and civil society to better understand fires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The day concluded with a shared message: the combination of science, technical training, communication, and adaptive management will be essential to tackling future fires and ensuring a transition to more resilient landscapes and better-prepared societies.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
