{"id":16163,"date":"2025-10-22T09:16:04","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T09:16:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/ictvscc\/air-quality-report-for-the-city-of-valencia\/"},"modified":"2025-10-22T09:16:04","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T09:16:04","slug":"air-quality-report-for-the-city-of-valencia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/ictvscc\/air-quality-report-for-the-city-of-valencia\/","title":{"rendered":"Air quality report for the city of Val\u00e8ncia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A study based on p<strong>assive NO\u2082 dosimetry campaigns conducted between 2023 and 2025 provides the first detailed snapshot of air quality in Valencia, <\/strong>highlighting the importance of reinforcing emission prevention and control measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the main findings of the first report from the <strong>PREDATICS Project<\/strong>, coordinated by researchers at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/+\">ITACA Institute of the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia (UPV)<\/a>. The report analyses the evolution of NO\u2082 levels in the city using measurements from more than 100 locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The results indicate that <strong>current concentrations are close to the maximum annual limit <\/strong>permitted by existing EU regulations (40 \u00b5g\/m\u00b3), <strong>yet are twice the new threshold of 20 \u00b5g\/m\u00b3 that will come into force in 2030.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/PIE_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15652\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Passive dosimetry device installed at the UPV<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this reason, the research team emphasizes that this study serves as a starting point for <strong>continuous monitoring of air quality in the city and for assessing the effectiveness of future mitigation measures.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe <strong>information will help design strategies that better reflect the reality of Val\u00e8ncia<\/strong> and move towards a healthier, more sustainable urban environment. Our results show that there are still areas with high pollution levels, but also confirm the importance of having accurate data to guide more effective policies,\u201d <strong>notes the PREDATICS team.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Evolution of NO<\/strong><strong>\u2082<\/strong><strong> Levels in the City<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report establishes a clear relationship between road traffic and NO\u2082 concentrations. The team therefore advocates strengthening emission prevention and control policies \u2014 particularly those related to urban traffic \u2014 to protect public health and ensure compliance with future EU regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Mapa-media-2024-dosimetria.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15653\" style=\"width:621px;height:auto\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Passive NO\u2082 dosimetry campaigns for the year 2024<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe <strong>highest levels are recorded at junctions, roundabouts, car parks, and access roads to Valencia, while the lowest correspond to parks, gardens, and pedestrian areas,<\/strong>\u201d explains <strong>Victoria Lerma<\/strong>, researcher at ITACA-UPV and coordinator of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study also finds that the official Air Quality Monitoring Network stations, located in areas with lower traffic density, record significantly lower values than those observed in high-traffic urban zones. Consequently, <strong>the PREDATICS team recommends complementing the official monitoring network with high-resolution campaigns to obtain a more accurate representation of citizens\u2019 actual<\/strong> exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe official stations provide only a partial picture.
