{"id":16157,"date":"2025-06-30T05:00:06","date_gmt":"2025-06-30T05:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/ictvscc\/the-european-informa-forests-moves-towards-forest-management-adapted-to-climate-change\/"},"modified":"2025-06-30T05:00:06","modified_gmt":"2025-06-30T05:00:06","slug":"the-european-informa-forests-moves-towards-forest-management-adapted-to-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/ictvscc\/the-european-informa-forests-moves-towards-forest-management-adapted-to-climate-change\/","title":{"rendered":"The European INFORMA Forests moves towards forest management adapted to climate change"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 11 and 12 June, the <strong>city of Suceava,<\/strong> in the heart of the Romanian Carpathians, hosted the <strong>7th General Assembly of the European <a href=\"https:\/\/informa-forests.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">INFORMA Forests project<\/a> <\/strong>\u2014 a key initiative aimed at adapting forest management to the challenges of climate change and promoting more sustainable forestry across Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meeting, <strong>organised by \u0218tefan cel Mare University of Suceava, brought together over 30 researchers and institutional representatives from the 14 consortium partners across<\/strong> 8 European Union countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coordinated by the <em>Climate Change and ICT Research Group <\/em>of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ITACA Institute at the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia (UPV<\/a>), and <strong>led by Professor Jos\u00e9 Vicente Oliver,<\/strong> INFORMA is at the c<strong>utting edge of developing scientific and technological tools<\/strong> to enhance forestry practices in a changing climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Meeting highlights<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the assembly, progress on the project&#8217;s various work packages was reviewed. <strong>Highlights included training programmes already underway, developed from surveys carried out with local stakeholders at the start of the initiative.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis training is essential to adapt forestry practices to new socioeconomic conditions\u201d, said Eduardo Rojas, an ITACA researcher who attended the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Pie_1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15331\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">During the assembly, progress on the project&#8217;s various work packages was reviewed<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another key topic was the <strong>role of integration forums <\/strong>\u2014 dialogue spaces for scientists, forest managers, and policymakers to translate scientific knowledge into viable management strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn parallel, <strong>data collection is nearing completion,<\/strong> which <strong>will enable us to assess the impact of different management techniques on carbon stocks using remote sensing technologies. <\/strong>This line of work paves the way for future applications in forest carbon credit certification\u201d, explained<strong> Celia Yag\u00fce,<\/strong> ITACA researcher and technical coordinator of the INFORMA project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/piE_2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15332\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Celia Yag\u00fce,<\/strong> ITACA researcher and technical coordinator of the INFORMA project.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regarding communication, the need to broaden the project\u2019s social outreach was emphasised. Highlights include INFORMA\u2019s presence at international events such as the Carbon Farming Summit and the exploration of new science outreach formats \u2014 for example, a \u201cspeed dating\u201d session with science journalists, scheduled to be held in Budapest this October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The working agenda also included a technical visit to the Sl\u0103tioara Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and part of the \u201cAncient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians\u201d. This field trip offered participants the opportunity to reflect on the value of well-preserved ecosystems as reference models for future forestry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/piE_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15333\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Eduardo Rojas, ITACA researcher. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe working groups are continuing to collect key data across the project\u2019s five bioregions \u2014 such as aboveground biomass, deadwood, and belowground carbon \u2014 essential for calibrating the forest models being developed,\u201d added Eduardo Rojas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Project significance and future objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alongside the progress presented at the assembly, the project team emphasised the intensified efforts over the past year to analyse the current shortcomings and barriers in the forest carbon certification system. Improvement proposals are being made in line with the EU Regulation on Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming (CRCF), which is set to come into full effect soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Celia Yag\u00fce, the project\u2019s technical coordinator,<strong> highlighted recent advances in the development and testing of innovative technologies for forest carbon monitoring:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese <strong>include field applications assisted by LIDAR for estimating biomass and infrared spectroscopy systems for on-site soil carbon analysis. <\/strong>Such technologies can greatly improve the accuracy of carbon accounting and reduce associated costs\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/piE_4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15334\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Marta Esteve Navarro, ITACA researcher at the photography centre<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project has also focused on <strong>enhancing the climate resilience of forest ecosystems.<\/strong> Professor Jos\u00e9 Vicente Oliver warned that the effects of climate change \u2014 such as fires, storms, or pest outbreaks \u2014 are intensifying, threatening the permanence of carbon stored in Europe\u2019s forests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt INFORMA, we are working to provide scientifically grounded guidelines to design dynamic protection systems adapted to each bioregion \u2014 systems capable of integrating climate risks and safeguarding the integrity of forest projects in the long term\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/pIE_5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15335\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Technical visit to the Sl\u0103tioara Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Project Conclusion in 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As INFORMA enters its final year, the consortium <strong>reaffirms its commitment to science-based forestry, <\/strong>helping to ensure that European forests are resilient in the face of climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project\u2019s <strong>final meeting will take place in Valencia during the first week of June 2026<\/strong>, marking the close of an international collaboration that aims to leave a lasting mark on European forest policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
