{"id":16155,"date":"2025-06-13T05:49:01","date_gmt":"2025-06-13T05:49:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/ictvscc\/the-geo-rin-conference-addresses-the-future-of-geothermal-energy-in-spain\/"},"modified":"2025-06-13T05:49:01","modified_gmt":"2025-06-13T05:49:01","slug":"the-geo-rin-conference-addresses-the-future-of-geothermal-energy-in-spain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/ictvscc\/the-geo-rin-conference-addresses-the-future-of-geothermal-energy-in-spain\/","title":{"rendered":"The Geo-RIN Conference addresses the future of geothermal energy in Spain"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers <strong>Javier Urchuegu\u00eda and Borja Badenes<\/strong>, from the<em> &#8216;ICTs against Climate Change&#8217; group of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the ITACA Institute <\/a><\/em>at the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia, played a prominent role at the <a href=\"https:\/\/benasque.org\/2025georin\/\">First Geo-RIN Conference,<\/a> held from June 2 to 6 in Benasque (Arag\u00f3n).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This event, supported by the<em> Geothermal Research and Innovation Network for Portugal and Spain<\/em> and backed by the CSIC Scientific Network <em>\u00abGeosciences for a Sustainable Planet,<\/em>\u00bb <strong>brought together representatives from academia, institutions, and industry to discuss the advances and challenges in geothermal ener<\/strong>gy\u2014a renewable energy source poised to play a crucial role in Spain&#8217;s transition to a more sustainable, secure, and decentralized energy model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00ab<strong>Geothermal energy is at a turning point,<\/strong> with growing interest in its role within the energy transition, as it emerges as a reliable and <strong>local solution <em>for reinforcing <\/em>energy supply security in Europe<\/strong>\u00ab, highlighted the organizers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Specifically, the conference served as <strong>an ideal forum for knowledge exchange, covering topics <\/strong>from 3D modeling of geothermal systems to professional certification in heat pump technologies, including urban hybrid solutions, 5GDHC networks, and the resilience of thermal ecosystems to climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Pie_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15295\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Javier Urchuegu\u00eda delivered the keynote lecture of the conference.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ITACA\u2019s prominent role<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the conference, Professor<strong> Javier F. Urchuegu\u00eda,<\/strong> ITACA researcher and President of the European Geothermal Panel, <strong>delivered the event&#8217;s keynote speech titled \u201c<em>Geothermal Energy and the Future of Urban Energy in Europe\u201d.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his talk, he addressed how geothermal energy is emerging as an alternative energy source in Europe, amid\u00a0an international context marked by the need to reduce energy dependence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<strong>More and more European cities are incorporating geothermal energy into their municipal climate adaptation energy plans.<\/strong> Its combination with renewable heat pumps represents a resilient, efficient, and decentralized solution\u201d, Urchuegu\u00eda said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Urchuegu\u00eda also <strong>moderated the roundtable <em>\u201cShallow Geothermal Energy in Urban and Energy Planning\u201d<\/em><\/strong><em>,<\/em> a strategic discussion forum that analyzed regulatory frameworks, innovative urban models, and sustainability promotion policies from both local and European perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Pie_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15296\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Borja Badenes was part of the organising committee and gave an oral presentation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, <strong>Borja Badenes,<\/strong> also an ITACA researcher, served on the organizing committee and presented the talk titled <em>\u201cTowards a European Common Certification Framework for Shallow Geothermal Heat Pump Professionals\u201d.<\/em> His work <strong>proposes a roadmap to harmonize technical training across Europe\u2014an essential step toward<\/strong> ensuring efficient and safe installations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For all these reasons, the prominent p<strong>articipation of ITACA Institute researchers in this international forum reinforces the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia&#8217;s role in developing innovative, sustainable energy solutions aligned with the European Union\u2019s climate-neutrality<\/strong> goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first edition of this congress is expected to become a key platform for geothermal debate and progress in the Iberian Peninsula, with its next edition scheduled to take place in Portugal in 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n&nbsp;\n<br><br>\n<hr>\n\n\n\n<p
