{"id":16153,"date":"2025-06-02T11:38:23","date_gmt":"2025-06-02T11:38:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/ictvscc\/geothermal-energy-is-a-solution-for-decarbonising-the-sector\/"},"modified":"2025-06-02T11:38:23","modified_gmt":"2025-06-02T11:38:23","slug":"geothermal-energy-is-a-solution-for-decarbonising-the-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.itaca.upv.es\/ictvscc\/geothermal-energy-is-a-solution-for-decarbonising-the-sector\/","title":{"rendered":"Geothermal energy is a solution for decarbonising the sector"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A team of <strong>researchers from the <em>ICTs against Climate Change<\/em> (ICT vs CC) group<\/strong> at the ITACA Institute of the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia (UPV) has collaborated on the <strong>development of an innovative system that improves the efficiency of geothermal heat exchangers<\/strong>\u2014crucial components for capturing heat from the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thanks to this breakthrough, <strong>installation costs have been reduced by more than 20%.<\/strong> \u201cProper design and sizing of these exchangers are essential to maximise the performance of a geothermal installation\u201d, the study authors emphasise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The results of the research, <strong>led by Miguel \u00c1ngel Mateo Pla along with Borja Badenes, Bruno Armengot, Jos\u00e9 Manuel Cuevas, Javier F. Urchuegu\u00eda, and Burkhard Sanner (UBeG GbR<\/strong>), have been published in the journal <em>Renewable Energy<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Energy Transition<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Geothermal energy plays a crucial role in the energy transition, offering an efficient and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. However, high initial costs remain a barrier to its widespread adoption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe <strong>efficiency of a geothermal system largely depends on the materials used in the heat exchangers.<\/strong> Until now, plastic pipes and cement-based grouts adapted from other industrial uses have been employed, which has limited thermal efficiency and increased costs\u201d, explain the ITACA researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To enhance this technology, the UPV team participated in the development of new materials that improve thermal efficiency by 30% and was responsible for their validation. <strong>Tests carried out at UPV\u2019s Geothermal Laboratory showed significant improvements in the performance of geothermal heat exchangers.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the Thermal Response Tests (TRT), the thermal resistance of the exchangers decreased from 0.15 mK\/W to 0.1 mK\/W.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese figures could mark a turning point in the widespread adoption of geothermal energy, by lowering initial costs and improving the energy performance of installations\u201d, the researchers from ITACA-UPV assert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed, <strong>the application of these new materials could facilitate the deployment of geothermal systems in urban and industrial environments with high thermal demand.<\/strong> \u201cIt is a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels,\u201d they add.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This project has been supported by the European Union\u2019s Horizon 2020 programme, which has funded various initiatives to improve the efficiency of geothermal energy as a renewable source. In this context is the H2020 GEOCOND European project, whose main goal has been to research and assess new materials that aim to improve the thermal efficiency of geothermal heat exchangers (borehole heat exchangers, BHEs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reference<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miguel \u00c1.
